CanadaxReader - Ring Pop - One Shot


~6 years old~

"Alfred, give it back!" you shouted, chasing the laughing boy around the playground. "That's Matthew's Ring Pop! Give it back right now or else!"

The louder twin laughed his head off and asked mockingly, "Or else what? You can't do anything to the hero! You're just a girl! Ha ha ha!"

He stood on the other end of the picnic table where Francis, Arthur, and your mother sat. You skidded up to it and glared at him, jerking this way and that as he faked which direction he was gonna run. Finally, after losing your temper, you picked up the burger you had abandoned in order to chase Alfred and snarled, "Or else I'll do this!"

And with that said, you chucked it at his stupid face. It hit dead on, covering him with ketchup and mustard, and sent him flying backward onto his bottom. Then before any of the adults could react, you ran around and snatched up the candy from his grubby hands. Then you sped off to return to Matthew, who you knew was hiding in the tunnel connecting the two jungle gyms of the playground together.

"(Name)! Get back here!" your mom yelled, but you ignored her. You did what any cool kid would do by running up the slide and then climbed over to Matthew. You held out the Ring Pop to him with a toothy grin and breathed, "Got it!"

His face brightened as you dropped the grape-flavored candy into his palms.

"H-How did you get it back?" he asked. You smirked and said, "I threw a burger in his face! You should have seen it! It looked like the burger attacked him!"

Matthew laughed quietly before smiling up at you. "Thank you, (Name). You're a good friend."

"Not-uh! I'm your best friend forever!" you pouted, "And don't you forget it!"

"O-Okay!" he responded, looking away from your frown. You laughed and hugged him.

"I love you, Mattie!"

"I love you, t-too... (Name)..."

.....

"H-H-Hey, (Name)?"

"What, Mattie?"

"Will you marry me?" the little Canadian said quietly, offering the Ring Pop back.

You stared at the ring then picked your (eye color) gaze back up to his blue eyes.

"Of course! I love you, Mattie!" you repeated, tackling him into a hug with a giggle and giving him a kiss on the cheek. He smiled and lightly chuckled too but the moment was ruined when two angry voices called your names.

"Uh-oh," you both said simultaneously, looking at each other with fear-filled eyes. That sounded a lot like Arthur and your mom.

Taking the Ring Pop back, you pushed him out of the tunnel. Then you grabbed his hand and dragged him as you ran to find a new hiding spot and hopefully avoid punishment a little longer...



~19 years old~

"Hey! (Name)!"

Looking up from your textbook, you saw a guy from math class hurrying over. You crooked a questioning eyebrow up at your boyfriend of four years, Matthew, who sat next to you up against the oak tree you two were sitting under. You were terrible at math. If he was coming over to ask for help then he was sorely mistakened.

You got up off your stomach and stood, kicking your college textbook closed. You met him a couple steps away from your picnic study session and greeted him with a friendly smile.

"Hey, Jaden. What can I do for ya?" you asked.

"Well, I was wondering if you'd like to go out with me." he said with a huge grin. You blinked. Well, that was one of the last things you expected to hear.

"Ha ha... Uh, well, you see..." you spluttered, trying to come up with an answer. But before you could, a stern voice beside you suddenly said, "No, she would not. She's engaged."

You turned to see Matthew standing beside you, looking angry. You blinked in shock again.

"What?" you and Jaden said together.

"You mean as in marriage? How could she be? She's barely nineteen!" Jaden continued. Matthew gave him a dark look and took your hand protectively, saying, "It's none of your business. She's off limits! Now leave!"

Jaden glared and didn't look like he was about to give up when you spoke up.

"Look, Jaden, I don't know what he's talking about but he's right. Er, sort of... Anyway, I'm not really interested in you and I have a boyfriend so I have to say 'no'. Sorry."

He gaped at you then looked at Matthew and back. You gave him a meaningful look to say, I mean it. Go away. Jaden furrowed his brows and then stomped away, grumbling to himself. When he was out of earshot, you pulled your hand from Matthew's and threw him the same look.

"What the heck was that about? I'm not engaged!" you said with a laugh. "I can't believe you'd say something like that! I never knew you could put on the tough guy act! You've got the green monster bad!"

Matthew reverted back to his shy demeanor and had a confused mask on, blushing slightly.

"You don't remember?"

"Remember what?"

Matthew didn't say anything as he went back over to the picnic basket. He got something from it and turned to you. He held out in his palm a grape-flavored Ring Pop.

"Oh, Matthew..." you said, staring at the sincerity in his eyes. "We were just kids..."

"I-I know..." he said quietly, "But I really meant it... I love you, (Name). Even back then I knew I wanted to be with you forever... So please..." He got down on one knee and held out the candy ring to you. "Will you marry me?"

You found a smile slipping onto your face as you burst out laughing.

"Get me a real ring and we'll talk." You chuckled, accepting the Ring Pop and bending down to give him a quick kiss. When you pulled away, you were shocked to find a black velvet box in your face. You looked to Matthew's face and saw him smiling. Not a shy smile, but a true happy one(despite the fact he was blushing a darker shade now).

"I figured you would say that." he said, pulling open the lid of the tiny box, "Will you marry me, (Full Name)?"

You stared at him for a long while then glanced down at the candy on your finger. You felt tears fall from your eyes as you slipped the plastic ring off your finger. You felt yourself laughing again as you swapped it for the silver ring he had. You gazed into his bespectacled eyes for a moment before tackling him to the ground, kissing him vigorously.

I'll take that as a 'yes'. Matthew thought happily, holding you close. I love you, (Name)...
